How are online interviews different?
In today's world and age technology can be overwhelming and with online interviews, you need to feel comfortable using whichever method your prospective employee prefers (zoom, Microsoft teams, sky or FaceTime)
- Make sure you test run with your computer or device.
- Pick the perfect spot for lighting , use window light against you, turn off any lights overhead. Avoid lighting from behind causing shadows.
- Forgo any virtual background, even though they are tempting, backgrounds are distracting and unprofessional for a first-time meeting.
- Remove distractions, and silence anything that could interfere with your conversation, including your phone and email notifications on your computer. It is rude to be interrupted during an interview.
- Log in early and test setup
- Sit up and dress professionally- first impression matters, chef uniform, formals, etc make a better impression. Good posture makes you feel more confident, puts you in a better mood, and communicates openness.
- Smile - smiling will make you look more professional and engaged, it will actually help you feel more powerful and energetic.
- Look your interviewer in the eye. Yes in an online interview eye contact is important, look directly at the webcam instead of the computer screen.
- Listen carefully- its easy to miss something important during an interview.
- Don't rely on notes.
- Be yourself, the interviewer is expecting to come across as a genuine and authentic professional.
- Write down five questions to discuss with your employer.
